LUMINOSITY AND OBSCURITY IN THE PRACTICE OF MATÍAS ERCOLE, AT LA COMETA

By Álvaro de Benito

Antes de todo (Before All Things) is the solo exhibition by Matías Ercole (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1986) presented at the Madrid venue of La Cometa. The show centers on the exploration of luminosity and obscurity as elements that, although seemingly opposed, become fundamental to the construction of the image. Drawing on the conceptual dimension of the physical principle, the artist materializes the tension between concealment and revelation through techniques such as sgraffito, scraping, and stripping.

CRITIQUE AND CONCEPTUALISM OF CARTOGRAPHY IN KARLO ANDREI IBARRA

By Álvaro de Benito

A veces sueño que cae un meteorito sobre el mundo y lo construye (Sometimes I dream that a meteorite falls upon the world and builds it) is the proposal that Karlo Andrei Ibarra (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1982) presents at the Madrid venue of La Cometa. This exhibition, of enormous conceptualism, originates in the author’s fantasy and is transformed into a paradox: the reconstruction of a world that seems only possible through the impact of an asteroid.

CARLOS CASTRO AND MYTHOGRAPHY AS A SOCIAL FRAMEWORK

By Álvaro de Benito

Carlos Castro (Bogotá, Colombia, 1981) arrives at La Cometa’s Madrid venue with Mythstories, an exhibition that delves into the validity of mythography as an active structuring force in contemporary societies. Employing a medieval aesthetic in the composition of the tapestries that materialize his work, the Colombian artist reinforces the idea that the genesis and support of myths remain present, just as they have always been, as constitutive narratives of history and historiography.

MYSTICAL AND SACRED WATER: ANA GONZÁLEZ AT LA COMETA

Ana González (Bogotá, Colombia, 1974) explores the significance of water as a medium, an environment, and a sacred entity in Llovizna, her solo exhibition at La Cometa’s Madrid venue. Rooted in the Muisca culture’s reverence for water as an integral part of sacred land, this element becomes the symbolic core of her exhibition. Through it, the artist reflects on its spiritual value while also exposing the harsh reality of the Bogotá River, using symbolism to prompt a deeper awareness of environmental degradation.

QUIEBRAMALES: A PROJECT FOR EDUCATION AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

Quiebramales commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the conception of the David Quiebramales project. The exhibition at La Cometa gallery revisits the biopolitics that traverse the bodies affected by war, the structures that build (and destroy) a society, and education as a path to social justice.
